“I really think that if there’s any one enemy to human creativity, especially creative writing, it’s self-consciousness.”
- Andre Dubus II
My purposes for taking this course:
I am working towards earning earned admission credits.
Writing and reading are things that I have always enjoyed.
I want to further my writing knowledge and experience.
Taking a self-paced online course is a great way to simultaneously pursue a college and a horseback riding career.
Similar to purpose in writing, the reasons for taking this course are “tied to the achievement of an outcome.” YouTube, 24 May 2019, youtu.be/bo8lagT8yIc. The reasons I listed above are related to the outcome I hope to achieve as I work through and after completing the course. The reasons are similar but, they can all be grouped into different contexts. Some reasons may overlap or and share more than one context.
Hearing about the opportunity this course offered was something I knew I didn’t want to miss out on. ASU has given students the chance to earn credit and admission while working remotely. The convenience and educational benefits from ENG101 assist me in an academic context.
When I started this course, I hoped to further my reading and writing knowledge. I am now halfway through the course and feel more confident in my writing and sharing my work. There was a period of self-discovery for me when I started this course. Before ENG101, I had only ever written essays for school and original works I created, which I only shared with teachers or kept for myself. The assignments have allowed me to step into my own as a writer and discover my writing style. A skill I have always struggled with as a writer is the ability to share my work. While I knew that the main reason for my struggle was my insecurity in my writing, I never was given a chance to overcome the problem. ENG101 has pushed me out of my comfort zone by sharing my work on my ePortfolio. My new portfolio and experience have created benefits in an academic and personal context.
I have been an online student for over five years. I never thought that when I became a college student, I could continue my online educational journey. ASU has allowed me to travel and pursue my horseback riding career while working on school on my own time. As many athletes know, juggling school and sports can be challenging and often ends with deciding between the two. Now in this digital age, athletes can pursue an academic and athletic career. I once thought I would have to make a difficult decision to pause or quit my horseback riding career to attend college. That has now disappeared, thanks to ASU. The remote accessibility and flexibility have helped me in an academic, personal, and professional context.
After reflecting on my reasons, I now have the information to conclude my primary purpose for taking this course. As I noted at the start of my journal, the reasons are related because they are associated with the same achievement and outcome. So, the primary reason for taking this course is a combination of all of my reasons as they all assist me as I progress towards my goals.
