"There's an audience for everything."
- Davy Jones
I will be examining and analyzing iMessage by iPhone. iMessage is the text messaging system for all Apple iPhone, iPad, and Mac users. This feature cannot be used for any messaging to people with different phone types. Here are the requirements for the invoked audience:
- iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch users
- People who own more than one Apple product
- Have access to cellular or Wi-Fi connection
- Are in constant contact with other Apple product users
Using iMessage is very convenient and fun if the consumer fits the requirements for the invoked audience. While the features for the system are accessible to several different Apple products, there are terms that can hinder its use. As mentioned in the list for invoked audience requirements, those who wish to use iMessage must have a steady cellular or Wi-Fi connection. This means if you have purchased an Apple product with the iMessage feature, you then must pay for a telephone carrier or Wi-Fi system. Within those restrictions, there are more restrictions. Telephone carriers may charge more if you go over the set amount of data you can use according to your plan. Owning a Wi-Fi box is helpful if you are at home but not conducive for those who travel or are rarely home.
A significant problem for iMessage users is those with cellphones, computers, or other devices from another company. Companies like Samsung, Google, and LG do not support iMessage. If an iMessage user contacted someone with a Samsung device, every feature except sending a message would be unavailable.
If Apple were to expand their invoked audience, they would take note of suggestions that consumers are making. For instance, if Apple were to develop iMessage features so that other phone brand users could benefit from the system, the audience may expand. Another suggestion may be from those who own an Apple cellphone and a Microsoft laptop. It is difficult for consumers who have devices from multiple companies to benefit from the iMessage features.
Invoked audiences can be expanded if the primary consumer is understood. By examining how the context affects its consumers and how it could benefit more if changes were made is an excellent example of understanding the audience. Taking your audience into consideration translates into all forms of art, business, and work.
